Free at last

The radio alarm clicked on at 6am this morning. The first words I heard were “Alan Johnston, BBC correspondent, has been freed ….”. “Thank goodness” I said out loud. An understatement if ever there was one! This is wonderful news! I watched Alan on TV tonight and I am just so full of admiration for him. He conducted himself with such professionalism and dignity. But there was also such honesty about him – there can be no doubt that he feared for his life, no doubt that he wants to get out of there, and no doubt of the loneliness he experienced. But he is a survivor and he will go from strength to strength.

Welcome back Alan.

This really is wonderful news.

And he thought of his parents right away, too, which went straight to my heart! What a relief that he is free.

Hello, eg.

I've just scanned through the comments made about Johnston's release in the Scotsman (I'm about three days behind schedule so I think this was probably the issue of the 6th or 7th). Some readers seemed to using the joyous occasion of his release as a chance to have a go at the English ("If he'd had a Scots passport, maybe they'd have left him alone!" etc) and wonder what you think of this...?

Hope I'm not opening up a can of worms. I grew up around anti- English sentiment myself (complicated reasons), but often find myself baffled by the degree of animosity here. Is this fairly common? Rather rare? I would love to know your opinion.

I was so chuffed when I heard this news - his Mum really hadn't been coping well at all.

Sending you huge bunches of hugs, honey.
